What ‘The Office’ Sitcom Says About Tomorrow’s Office

 

Rosabeth Moss Kanter (@RosabethKanter) holds the Ernest L. Arbuckle professorship at Harvard Business School, where she specializes in strategy, innovation and leadership for change. In this short article she argues that offices as workplaces are going the way of retail stores. Shops have become showrooms, visited as part of a process rather than the only place to make a transaction. Just like retailing, work life has become multichannel—sometimes done in person F2F, sometimes remotely by Internet connections. And just as retail stores increasingly use floor space for events that build community or loyalty, offices are event or meeting spaces.
